# Legal DID FAQs

> Answers about Legal DID minting, wallet restrictions, non-transferability, privacy, identity updates, validity, burning, and minting again.

Find canonical answers to common questions about obtaining, minting, managing, and burning a Legal DID.

## Product and eligibility

### What is a Legal DID?

A Legal DID, or LDID, is a non-transferable on-chain identity token connected to supported verified claims and issued to a specific wallet. It is not a copy of the original identity document.

### Do I need a Palau ID first?

Not always. An eligible Palau ID journey can include a corresponding Legal DID, while the standalone Legal DID journey uses an existing supported legal identity and does not grant Palau Digital Residency.

### Will every website or exchange accept my Legal DID?

No. A service's ability to read public metadata does not guarantee acceptance or give it permission-based KYC access. Each service applies its own rules. See [Privacy and claims](/legal-did/manage-privacy-and-claims) for access requirements.

## Wallets and minting

### Which blockchain does production minting use?

Production Legal DID minting supports **Ethereum only**. Sepolia and other test networks are not valid production options. Both the mint review and wallet prompt must show Ethereum. If either shows another network or the two screens disagree, stop before signing or paying and [contact support](/support/contact-us).

### Can I mint more than one Legal DID?

An eligible identity can have multiple Legal DIDs, including tokens in different wallets or more than one token in the same wallet. Each request must meet the applicable identity eligibility, request-status, and fee requirements.

Pre-mint has a separate application-level limit: the flow does not accept another pre-mint request for an application that already has a mint record. Do not submit another mint while a request is awaiting approval or airdrop. See [Mint a Legal DID](/legal-did/mint-a-legal-did).

### Can I transfer my Legal DID to another wallet?

No. Legal DIDs cannot be transferred between wallets, including between two wallets you control. Changing your RNS.ID sign-in wallet or connecting a different wallet does not move an existing token.

### Why does the product say my wallet has already been used?

The minting flow rejects a wallet with an existing mint record for a different identity on the same blockchain. This check is separate from how many tokens the wallet holds. If you believe the wallet is associated only with your current identity, [contact support](/support/contact-us) with the mint record before paying or resubmitting.

### Why is my mint still pending?

A pre-mint or airdrop can wait for identity approval and suitable network conditions. Check minting history before resubmitting. Contact support if the status remains unchanged unexpectedly.

### Can RNS.ID recover a Legal DID issued to a wallet I cannot access?

RNS.ID does not provide a way to recover or move an existing Legal DID from a wallet you cannot access. Recovering your RNS.ID account or changing its sign-in wallet does not restore the destination wallet's keys. Use a self-custody wallet whose recovery information you have stored securely.

## Claims and privacy

### What is the difference between Minimal and Standard claims?

Minimal exposes the core validity, jurisdiction, screening, age-threshold, and zero-knowledge-version claims. Standard adds fields such as ID type, gender, birth year, hashes, issue date, and expiration date. See [Privacy and claims](/legal-did/manage-privacy-and-claims) for the complete lists.

### Does KYC access expose only a verification result?

No. The permission-based KYC service can return personal details and, at higher permission levels, identity images where available. It is separate from the **Minimal** and **Standard** public metadata profiles. See [Privacy and claims](/legal-did/manage-privacy-and-claims) for the data-access distinction and access requirements.

### Does turning KYC off hide my public claims?

No. Turning KYC off blocks supported KYC requests that check the setting, but your selected public metadata remains separate. It does not erase blockchain history or information another party previously received or cached.

### Why does a marketplace still show my old claims profile?

It may have cached the token metadata. Use the available metadata-refresh action in RNS.ID or the marketplace and allow it time to update.

### Can a Palau ID KYC update affect my Legal DID metadata?

Yes. Approved updates to a linked Palau ID record may be reflected in identity information in the token's metadata, such as age-related claims or birth year. Update KYC does not itself re-mint the token or change its public metadata profile or KYC-access setting. Third-party displays may remain cached. See [Effect on Legal DID](/palau-id/update-personal-information#effect-on-legal-did).

### Does a token in my wallet mean my identity is still valid?

No. A token can remain in your wallet after the underlying identity expires or is revoked. Its identity status can be invalid even though the token still exists. Expiry or revocation does not itself burn the token, and holding it does not guarantee acceptance by a service.

## Burning

### Who can burn a Legal DID?

Under the current contract, only the wallet that holds the selected token can burn it. RNS.ID Support cannot burn that token on your behalf. See [Burn a Legal DID](/legal-did/permanently-burn-legal-did) for the steps and warnings.

### Can I undo a Legal DID burn?

No. A confirmed burn permanently destroys the selected token. RNS.ID Support cannot restore it.

### Can I mint another Legal DID after burning one?

The current contract allows the same wallet to receive a newly issued Legal DID after a burn. Any new request must still meet the applicable identity eligibility, minting checks, and fee requirements. It creates a new token; it does not restore the destroyed token. Burning does not automatically request or guarantee a replacement, and you should not assume a later mint will be free.

### Is burning a Legal DID the same as deleting my Palau ID?

No. Burning is a wallet transaction affecting the selected on-chain token. Palau ID deletion is a separate account and identity-lifecycle action with its own consequences.
